The Design & Sustainability Research Center from the federal University of Paraná or NDS/UFPR (Núcleo de Design & Sustentabilidade da Universidade Federal do Paraná)was founded in 2003 with resources received trough a project which were approved at FINEP.
Yet in 2003 the Research Centre acquired the primary principles of sustainability in its proposal, taking in account the environmental, social and economical dimensions in design projects, focusing on the product life cycle assessment. A concept brought us by Professor Dr. Carlo Vezzoli from the Milan Polytechnic.
The NDS/UFPR has the support from researchers who come from many other departments in UFPR as well as other Universities in Brazil and worldwide. This fact provides an extremely collaborative environment to develop researches.
In 2007 NDS/UFPR was one of the research groups that joined the implementation of the Design Postgraduate Program at UFPR.

Objectives:

To develop research projects: always done in a partnership with characters that part of our society (companies, foundations, universities, tec.) in such a way to obtain trustful results under practical and scientific criteria.
To promote activities of social interest: disseminate knowledge trough courses outside college, scientific events and publications.
To support the academic formation: generate didactic and pedagogical tools for the undergraduate and post-graduate design courses.

Activities (past and present):

DESIS Project:
In UFPR it was chosen for project DESIS participation to prepare students regarding Social Innovation thematic. Since 2008 till 2010, the course System Design for Social Innovation was offered three times in the Design Department, UFPR.
Introduced end of 2008, the discipline was offered the first time in an extension course format, open to the community. In 2009, the discipline was offered as an elective course for undergraduates students of design. Next year, 2010, it was offered for students of the master in design. The first course was given in 32 hours and with 9 inscriptions: 5 were graduate students of product design, one was a professor from another institution and 3 were students from others areas and institutions. In this first course three cases of promising initiatives were raised.
In 2009 the course was offered as an elective discipline, System Design for Social Innovation, for the undergraduate, total of 60 hours having 20 inscriptions, mainly students of the third year of product design course, UFPR. They have raised five new promising cases. The discipline offered for the master level had had 12 participants and a total of 45 hours. These students have raised more three different cases.

The table below present the 11 cases raised in the three disciplines.
