DESIS 2011 Tongji-Aalto-DuocUC University Design Summer Camp

Design For the Rural and Urban Connection to Promote Social Innovation.

Aalto Design Factory, Sino-Finnish Center, Tongji University

Xian Qiao village, Shu Xin Town, Chongming Island

As an active member of DESIS China, the DESIGN Harvest project keeps on exploring new ways of developments, considering the rural and the urban as a complementary yin yang relationship to maintain identity but promote

exchange of resources. In this line, students from China, Chile, Hong Kong and Finland are getting together in Shanghai and the Chongming islands to conduct field and desk research under the motto: Design For the Rural and Urban Connection to Promote Social Innovation.

The research will be followed by a concept design activity that will be host for the rest of the days at Design factory inside Tongji University. The workshop’s subtopics are:

1  Designing mobile services for rural users to enhance the communication between the rural and urban areas.

2  Reusable design for rural family idle space

3  Product and branding design inspired by rural life style

Final exhibition of the works will be organized (Exhibit in 2011 Shanghai international creative industry week, Exhibit in 2012 Helsinki Cumulus conference May 2012, Exhibit in 2012 Santiago Cumulus conference,

November 2012) and will cover the dissemination of the workshop results in the industry and academic community.
