The war of times, places and interactions has already been started. Everyday, millions of people challenge traditional ways of doing things and introduce new, different, and more sustainable behaviours. The common denominator of these initiatives is that the involved people compensate for a reduction in consumption (in goods and space) with an increase in something else that they consider more valuable. This “something else” is generally represented by the increase of their environment physical and social qualities. We can refer to them as sustainable qualities: qualities that ask for more sustainable behaviours in order to enjoy them.

Is DESIS a “distributed design research agency”? Not yet, but we are working on it! As a matter of fact, since the Meeting in Helsinki in May 2012, several steps have been taken in this direction. Some of them have produced results that are already visible and quantifiable. Others are still “under water” like inter-Labs discussion on possible initiatives (events and research programs) to be conceived and developed collaboratively. (....)

DESIS exhibition, from Denver to Beijing

The Cumulus conference in Denver organized by the Rocky Mountain College for Art and Design featured a Design Expo. It combined both case studies collected during the DESIS Light Expo back in May 2011 at the Cumulus Conference at Strate College in Paris, and case studies from DESIS Labs in the US. Mariana Amatullo and Eduardo Strakowskij, curators of the exhibition, selected and presented the projects into different thematic areas. The same criteria will be used in the Beijing exhibition, where the DESIS Exhibition will organically grow to include case studies from China.

DESIS forum Beijing - Call for submission

Thanks to the committed members from DESIS China, the 4th DESIS Forum will take place in the framework of the Tao for Sustainability conference. After the successful Forums in Shanghai, Paris and the coming one in Denver, USA, this Forum will gather members, partners, friends and all those interested in the design for social innovation and sustainability in the region, comprising not only China but hopefully designers and design schools from South East Asia, Japan and Korea.
