DESIS Africa aims at bringing about sustainable social change in Africa through enhanced collaborative networks that promote innovation and knowledge-sharing.

Background
The Creative Communities for Sustainable Lifestyle-Africa (CCSL-A) project that was carried out between 2008 and 2009 in different cities in Africa, was the foundation upon which DESIS-Africa was built. Participating universities were Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Botswana, University of Nairobi, Maseno University among others. In 2010, DESIS-Africa remained fairly informal with participants from ‘founding’ universities carrying out social innovation activities and maintaining communication with other international DESIS members. In 2011 three of these universities namely Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Botswana and University of Nairobi were the first to formerly request to set up DESIS labs.

Future plans
DESIS-Africa hinges its success on strong networks among its members. It therefore plans for an ‘Africa meets Africa’ program that will run through the year 2012 with the aim of bringing together the three DESIS Labs in collaborative design workshops involving academia, industry and the community. This program will draw upon the unique opportunities that each country presents with the hope that the series of workshops will culminate in a design conference at the end of 2012.
